The Potential Model
Vera F. Birkenbihl (1946–2011) was a German management trainer and non-fiction author. She popularized the concept of "brain-friendly learning" across the German-speaking world and gave talks for decades on learning, communication, and creativity.
Her potential model describes how far more ability lies dormant in every person than classic learning and education methods bring out — provided you work with the brain's natural way of functioning instead of against it, for instance through visual methods, repetition at the right rhythm, or deliberately engaging both hemispheres of the brain. During her lifetime she explicitly allowed recordings of her talks to be shared freely — her stated legacy to future generations.
Why this resonates with me
As a father of two daughters and a Hap-Ki-Do kids' trainer, I've spent years thinking about the same question: how do children really learn — not through pressure or rote memorization, but through methods that fit how their brain works? Birkenbihl's work remains one of the clearest sources on this in the German-speaking world.
